I have the same problem but on a MacBook Pro Retina E 2013, and have performed every diagnostic, AHT test, suggestion, etc., to no avail, after 'upgrading' to High Sierra. I found out my camera works just fine if I start my mac in Safe Mode, being able to turn it on when using FaceTime without a problem. Since Safe Mode uses a set of basic drivers, my display is unbelievably slow, but I get no errors whatsoever. As soon as I boot up normally again, my camera stops working, no matter what. Looks like High Sierra is too high for older macs, at least for now. Hopefully Apple will acknowledge and patch it accordingly soon enough. One way is to search for googlechrome.dmg on the HD or in old backups and verify the version from the Info.plist, if you're using OS X. Download java for chrome mac. For anybody that could use this info: Just as a follow up to my previous post. On my rMBP 13 E 2013, I went ahead with the clean install of High Sierra, then did some testing as follows: * Right after it finished I tested the camera and it worked just fine with FaceTime. * Then I installed the newest update from the AppStore (macOS HS Supplemental Update -no version), and tried again, worked fine. * Then installed Skype for Mac, and it found the camera without a problem this time. Good mac games on steam. So I guess it pays off to go the extra mile with the clean install on older machines for this macOS version. I hope this info can be of help. With FaceTime, Photo Booth, Skype, Skype for Business, after a random (literally random) time of use (even just in preview, when you only see the camera image through FaceTime) my video freezes. If I crazily 'shake' the FaceTime preview window around the screen for a few seconds I was often able to 'force' the camera video to freeze (doesn't reproduce the issue 100% of the times anyway). I'm using a MBP Late 2016 (the one with TouchBar) with 16Gb and AMD 460 GPU so I don't think it's a matter of machines' performances. I tried the clean installation but didn't solve the issue: right after the setup I tested the FaceTime preview and it froze. I've been in touch with Apple support and I have got an appointment at Genius Bar in few days.
